More Curtains

After my success with nursery curtains, I decided to try my hand at a set for the master bedroom.

When it came time to redo our master bedroom, I based our paint color on some fabric I had. It was a cotton striped fabric that had come to me by way of my Nonna. She has the largest stash of fabric I have ever seen, and periodically Nonno tells her that she needs to get rid of some. So, yay me! Free fabric!! Who can beat it! And much of it is designer fabric as well, thanks to my Aunt who used to work in New York.

So..anyways....I took a scrap of the fabric to the paint store, and DH and I picked a paint color to match. Then I left the hard stuff to him...(You know, removing paneling, repairing plaster, replacing baseboards, installing crown molding, etc..etc.) Then I helped him paint. (I do the tedious cutting that he has no patience for.) Then finally, I whipped out my sewing machine (actually at the time, my mother's old 1950 singer featherweight) and straight stitched us up 2 pairs of curtains. Then we hung them in our newly remodeled bedroom. I didn't line the curtains (we use roller shades to block light), which turned out to be a good choice. If you just shut the curtains without putting the shades down, you get a lovely glow in the room that just makes you go aaaahhhh.

Nursery Decor

First off, I'd like to note, that this is stuff I made a little over 2 years ago. The pictures are recent however, because I finally have time to show my handiwork off to the world. (Anyone with a baby will understand)

This is the first set of curtains that I sewed myself. A basic straight stitch all around, these were super easy to make. I used cotton fabric I got at Wal-mart for $1 a yard. SCORE! For that price, I bought the whole bolt, which was a little over 9 yards. The cutting lady looked at me like I was nuts when I told her I didn't need her to cut it, just measure so I knew how much was there. As you can see, it's a pretty blue. What you can't really see well is the little green frogs printed all over it. For the ties, I threaded green ribbon through eye hooks mounted into the window frame. A super cute look for my little boy's room! Then I decided to try my hand at a diaper stacker. For this one, I followed directions from the book, "Nursery Decor for Beginners" by Coats & Clark. Super-easy to make and customize! In addition to the frog fabric (had to match the curtains!) I used green double-bias fold tape for the edging and ties. And, since I really did have so much fabric left, and the cushion fabric was just terribly ugly, I recovered the cushions on my glider rocker for the nursery. It has since been moved out of the nursery to make more play room, but I think it looks pretty neat. And it's super comfy as well.
